A Bride’s Guide

It’s your big day, it’s really exciting and you must be bursting with questions so we’ve put together this list of some of the ones we get asked the most. We hope this helps, but don’t worry if your question’s not here. Just drop us an email and we’ll get straight to it.

The top questions asked by our couples…

Should I have a top table?

It’s up to you really. It’s not traditional anymore and plenty of our brides and grooms opt to sit among their guests. However, if you choose a top table you can sit as many guests as you wish, unlike a traditional round table.

Who goes on the top table?

Traditionally it’s the bride and groom, parents of both, chief bridesmaids and best man, but again, it’s your wedding.

How many people go on each table?

Between 8-12. Any more and your guests will be short of elbow room.

Should I have speeches before or after the meal?

More and more people are moving speeches from their usual slot after the wedding breakfast. Maybe speak to those making the speeches as nerves are a big factor in how much they can enjoy their meal.  Some people opt to stagger them before and after, or even between courses.

In what order are the speeches made?

The host welcomes and toasts the bride and groom (traditionally the host was the father of the bride as it was the bride’s family who paid for the wedding), the groom responds and toasts the bridesmaids then the best man responds on behalf of the bridal party and reads any messages. Nowadays, we’re seeing brides and mothers of the bride also taking to the floor to play a role.

What do I have to pay for my booking and when?

This option if payments may change ….

Payments are staged, with an initial deposit payable then further payments one month later, then six months before the wedding and a final payment six weeks before the big day.

Or if you’re happy to keep to exact amounts….

1 month after £1000

6 months before £1000

4-6 weeks before final payment due

What’s the total capacity of the venue?

We can cater for any wedding from 30 to 300 people.

Do you have accommodation on site?

Yes, we have two beautiful cottages, both sleeping eight in a combination of super king-sized, king-sized and twin rooms, with sleek kitchens and a lounge area to chill out after the excitement of the big day. One of these cottages is included in the price of your booking for the use of the bride and groom on their wedding night.

Can I book the cottages for the night before as well as the night of the wedding?

Of course you can, as long as they are available. Contact us six months before your wedding and we’ll check availability.

Who is the master of ceremonies?

We do not have a master of ceremonies on site here at Hurlston Hall. Your wedding planner will recommend our preferred master of ceremonies for your big day or you can bring your own. Many couples nominate a member of their party to act as master of ceremonies. We’ll, of course, support them throughout the day.

Do you have a list of suppliers for flowers, photography, hair and make up etc?

Yes, speak to our wedding planner and she’ll guide you to the right person for your needs.

Where do I leave my flowers at the reception?

The flowers tend to be displayed on the cake table.

Where is good for taking pictures?

Hurlston Hall is set in acres of landscaped grounds and we have a dedicated photo area overlooking our lake as well as wrap-around balconies and an atmospheric, tree-lined avenue. We often enjoy the most amazing sunsets across the course so, as the sun sets on your big day, you can create really beautiful pictures. See our gallery for some examples. The options for great pictures are endless.

When should we cut the cake, and is there a special way to do this?

The cake cutting typically takes place after dinner. For the first cut, your groom’s hands are placed over yours as you cut into the bottom layer of the cake. The groom makes the second cut solo and feeds the bride, and then it’s your turn.

What time can I get in the venue on the day of my wedding?

The room will be set up the night before and if you want to drop off place settings or favours, we’re open from 9.30am. Suppliers can also access the venue on the day of your wedding from 9.30am. Collection of equipment must be by 10.00am the following morning. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any deliveries (including wedding cake) to the venue prior to the day of the wedding.

Do you provide a cake knife?

Yes, we will provide a cake knife but you’ll need to bring your own stand as cake sizes and shapes vary so much.

Can we have fireworks?

Yes and fireworks are set off the other side of the lake to maximise the impact in the reflection on the water.

Can we give alcoholic favours?

Yes, miniatures or alcoholic chocs are fine.


Can we have confetti?

Yes, but we’re in the middle of the greenbelt so biodegradable only please.

Where do people have their ceremony at Hurlston?

We have a dedicated area in the south wing of the reception room with views over the course.

Can we have reception drinks outside?

Yes, we have an outdoor area for drinks right by our photograph staging area with views across the lake and the fields beyond.

What time is the bar open until?

Last orders are 12.45am and the room must be vacated by 1am.

Can we try the menu?

Of course, we want you to be really happy with your choice. We’ll have a wedding tasting in the Scullery restaurant three months before your wedding.

Is there car parking at the venue?

We have ample, free on-site car parking.

Will you help with place cards and table dressing?

Yes, please arrange for any table decorations, table plan, name cards etc. to be dropped off on the morning of your wedding.  Please package all items like name cards, favours etc. by each table number so we can make sure we set up tables correctly.

When do we finalise our wedding plans?

Everything is finalised six weeks before the big day at our final details meeting where we’ll walk you through every minute of the day and make sure everything is just perfect.
